One of my greatest fascinations as a writer is how to capture the innocence and magic of summer, especially the summers of youth and childhood, when you are young and summers are spent poolside and lakeside, floating by in golden memories of ice cream truck jingles and county fairs. It’s so fitting that my Academy of American Poets award-winning poem, 103 Degrees, was chosen for first place by the San Mateo County Fair, because going to that fair growing up was the very experience that inspired it. When you are young, everything is bigger and grander, like you are experiencing everything for the first time, so when I wrote that poem, I knew I wanted to capture the heat of the speaker’s experience and have this heat elevate the passion the speaker feels for their lover, as feelings often become more intense and more electric during the carefree days of summer. Writing that poem meant fusing together intimacy alongside innocence, to create the irresistible feeling you feel when you are newly infatuated and have it parallel, coincide with, that breathless childhood wonder.
For as long as I can remember, I've loved telling stories. Books to me were more necessary than breath. I don’t remember deciding that I wanted to be a writer. There was no grand declaration or announcement. I’ve never known wanting to be anything else. I’ve progressed from my second grade work, “The Life and Times of Dolley Madison” and my first grade fairytales to writing slightly more sophisticated pieces, but my desire to write remains intact. I am proud to share here some of my recent works, published in various magazines and journals all over the world.
